The Fourth Pillar
Sawm is the fourth pillar of Islam, and it's all about fasting!
Imagine a special month called Ramadan. During this month, grown-up Muslims (and older kids who are ready) choose not to eat or drink anything from the moment the sun comes up until it sets. It's a way for them to feel closer to Allah (God) and to learn patience and self-control.
Why do Muslims fast?
To feel closer to Allah: It's a special way to remember Allah and thank Him for everything He gives us.
To understand others: When we feel a little hungry, it helps us remember people around the world who don't have enough food. This makes us want to help them more!
To learn patience: It teaches us to be patient and control our desires. It's like a special training for our minds and bodies.
To be grateful: Fasting makes us appreciate the food and drinks we have even more when it's time to eat.
Do kids have to fast?
No, little kids don't have to fast! Fasting is for grown-ups and older children when they are strong enough. But even if you don't fast, you can still be part of Ramadan by:
Doing extra good deeds.
Helping others.
Reading the Quran.
Being extra kind to your family and friends.
Sawm is a special time for Muslims to grow closer to Allah, learn good habits, and remember to be kind and generous to everyone!
